Barry Holstun Lopez

Barry Holstun Lopez (born January 6, 1945) is an American essayist, poet, fiction writer and prose stylist whose work is best known for its ecological concerns.

Lopez was born in Port Chester, New York and raised in Southern California. He began attending the University of Notre Dame in 1966 and earned a graduate degree there in 1968. He went on to further graduate study at the University of Oregon (1969-1970). Lopez has been described as “the nation’s premier nature writer” by the San Francisco Chronicle. Frequently compared with Henry David Thoreau, Lopez’s non-fiction writing closely dissects the relationship between human culture and physical landscape, while his fiction addresses issues of intimacy, ethics and identity. An archive of Lopez' manuscripts and other works has been established at Texas Tech University. The writer has also served as a liaison between the University and the Comanche Nation.
